Michigan Lawmaker Reintroduces Bitcoin Reserve Bill
On September 20, 2025, Michigan State Representative Neil Friske reintroduced House Bill 4087, a proposal that would allow the state to hold Bitcoin as part of its financial reserves.
Originally introduced in 2023, the bill aims to amend Michigan’s financial policies to permit the state treasury to allocate a portion of its funds into Bitcoin. The updated version maintains that goal, signaling a continued interest in exploring digital assets as part of the state’s broader fiscal strategy.
If passed, HB 4087 would not mandate Bitcoin purchases but would give the state the legal framework to do so. The bill must go through the legislative process — including committee review, debate, and approval by both the Michigan House and Senate — before reaching the governor’s desk for final approval. At this stage, it remains uncertain whether the bill has enough support to move forward.
Michigan joins a small number of U.S. states exploring similar initiatives around digital assets, though no state has yet implemented an official Bitcoin reserve policy.
HB 4087 has been referred to the Committee on Government Operations for initial consideration.
